University of Pittsburgh

Ceremonies

August, December, and April graduates will be eligible to participate in two graduation ceremonies at the end of the Academic year: the University of Pittsburgh Annual Commencement Convocation and the School of Medicine Diploma Day.  Graduates can choose between the two or elect to participate in both ceremonies.  Each of these events occurs only once a year.

University-wide Graduate Degree Commencement Ceremony

This event typically happens the last weekend in April and is held at the Petersen Event Center.  An announcement will be sent via email directly from the University Events Office in March.  The announcement will also include information on how to obtain regalia for the ceremony. Dean Levine will hood doctoral students, or, if a graduate so requests, PhD advisors can do so instead. Unlimited seating for family and friends of graduates is available at no cost on a first come first serve basis.

School of Medicine Diploma Day

This event is organized in the School of Medicine and will be held at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum on the second to last Monday in May. An invitation will be sent via email in March and will be asked to RSVP to the Graduate Studies Office. The invitation will also include information on how to obtain regalia for the ceremony.  Diploma Day is an intimate ceremony that celebrates students graduating with a MD, PhD or MS degree in the School of Medicine.  Advisors are encouraged to attend and hood graduates at this ceremony, although it is not mandatory.  Unlimited seating for your family and friends is available at no cost on a first come first serve basis.
